Training Courses

Although sadly the Board of Parish Education is now no more, the function of providing training support for Children's and Youth ministry will be continued by the new Council of Mission and Discipleship.  At present you can take advantage of:

“Choices”

This new, very flexible, user friendly Basic Training Course for Children's Ministry is now available on CD Rom. All 6 modules can be used individually, or in a group, or with a facilitator. In other words it is designed to be used the way you want to work! Intended to equip workers with the background knowledge and understanding needed to work with children, the modules offered are:

  • Getting the Basics – guidelines for good children’s ministry
  • Being Biblical - how best to introduce and use the Bible with children
  • Fuel for Leaders – for leaders needing a renewing boost
  • Children for Real – understanding how children learn and develop
  • Dealing With It – responding to difficult situations
  • Child Protection – a refresher or supplement to the basic training

Try before you buy!  I will be happy to bring a demonstration copy to your church.

Coming soon....

“Core Skills for Children's Ministry”

This is a six module course in basic training for Children's Ministry will be launched in Edinburgh on Saturday 7 October 2006.  Put the date in your diary now and watch for more details as I receive them!

As a Presbytery we have already been involved in "Core Skills" by piloting one of the modules, which each last two hours.  The brave "guinea pigs" who allowed me to trial it on them were all enthusiastic about it.  I hope you will be too.  For more details about the course click here to visit the website

More help for leaders....

In response to requests from congregations, the Board of Parish Education also produced over the last two years a series of books called "Kids in Kirk" which addresses specific areas of work. The titles are:

  • Holiday Time, Quality Time - a holiday club guide
  • Nervous Tension - working with teens
  • Inspired, Alive and Under Five - working with pre-schoolers
  • Vision for Volunteers - how to recruit volunteers
  • 101 Ways into Worship - how to involve your children in worship

All of the above are flexible enough to be used by church groups as a self-help guide, or offered at Presbytery level as a workshop. Please contact me for details.

Informal Workshops

As well as all that, I will be happy to "customise" informal workshops for individual congregations, and I also occasionally run larger similar events at Presbytery level.

Workshops I have offered in this format have included

  • Introducing Children to Prayer
  • Using the Bible with children
  • Music with children
  • Music without musicians
  • Multi-Arts for Christmas *
  • Multi-arts for Easter *
  • Love In Action (how to cope with “difficult” children)
  • Worship with children
  • Storytelling

*(these cover music, art and craftwork, storytelling, drama, etc, with a choice of workshops)

and more..... just ask for what you need!

Child Protection Training

Training in the Church's Code of Good Practice is offered on a regular basis at Presbytery level, and also on request at congregational level, if needed. Application should be made via the Child Protection Co-ordinator in your congregation.

See the events page for details of courses currently on offer.
